Two Questions Concerning Ships and Careers

I'm new to this game and just researching the incredible number of things I can do in it. It's staggering - to the point where I have no friggin idea what I want to do. Does anyone have suggestions for careers? Things that make sense to do?

Second, from what I've read it seems every ship has some level of usefulness. Is that an accurate assessment?
