Do regifters still become elves?

I did a couple of regift exchanges and got magically transformed into an elf. I think it was one month per regift. I guess my elf-ness has expired because I seem to have reverted to being a normal santa, but I just sent another regift. Do regifters still become elves? If so, at what point is elfdom conferred – do you have to wait until the giftee marks the gift received (or proof of shipping is accepted)? Couldn't find this in the FAQs for some reason.
