240v 5HP Air Compressor Requirements

Looking into purchasing something along the lines of this for my garage, which I use for side automotive repair for myself and friends.

At my current rental property I have a dryer plug in the garage that I believe is 240v 30A Single Phase which I think should be sufficient to run it. It is my understanding that I should be able to check the front of the plug to determine this (Amperage). I know a soft-starter could still be advantageous on this circuit, but shouldn't be required necessarily, or at least I am under that impression.

Moving forward, I am looking to purchase a house about a year from now that could run the compressor. From everything I have read it seems that it is impossible in any configuration to run a compressor like this on a normal 120v 20A circuit. Even if you have a step-up transformer and a VFD/Soft-Start it would pull too many amps for the circuit to provide. Can anyone verify this? Basically needing to know so I don't buy a house without a 240v service in the garage if that is the case.

LET ME SAY AGAIN THAT I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN. I make no claims to know about any of this so please don't think I am stupid for asking. Thanks for any and all help!
