Anyone like to DM more than play?

I will start by saying i have had alot of memorable/fun playing experiences, but for a few years i have been the only one of my friends to DM. that was fine with me but as i made NPC after NPC, and saw them all fall, i kindof got the itch to play again. I would say openly, "i wish i could play!" not in a mean way but in an off the hand kind of comment way.

Well my players heard me and got someone to DM a game he had made. He is a disruptive player who has played for me before and seems to want to argue rules instead of play. I had a bad feeling but i really wanted to play again.

So the game went ok, it was linear and on tracks but for a one shot, we had fun moments together. I showed him the respect he rarely shows me. I had the idea if i showed table edicate, he would see that and learn. Any ruling he made i didn't question, and If he was at a loss on a rule i'ld say it RAW or where to find it RAW. Then i would let him decide. He made the comment the game he played for me before "no one should DM, without memorizing the rules." something i think is false, but its a fricking game, why am i going to get worked up about little comments.

i found that in the end, though i had moments of fun i was not happy. i left early respectfully just cause of life, and the ride home really questioned if i even wanted to be a PC again. I am an introspective kind of guy, so i wonder if the problem was me, or if i just like the all consuming power of DMing. Something i thought i wanted was just not fun.

Anyone else have stories or times you thought maybe being a DM or GM was just more fun?

EDIT: to be clear, everyone knew i would leave early because it was my daughters bed time, which i had brought to the game, to have a play date as well. it wasn't a take my ball and go home situation.
