Just give up now?

I am on turn 91 of an enormous sized earth map with 18 people and 22 city states. I have a MacBook Pro and know little about computer gaming besides this game. I have all sorts of real world historical leaders, I'm JFK. Basically hitler declared war on Spain and ever since it's about ten minutes of waiting in between turns. Should I just give up (wasted about 6 hours) and start again with a smaller map or people. Or is there some mod or something I can download to speed up the game
