Mistaken as an employee at a family reunion

I've been sitting on this one for a while, but after reading the other post about an Asian vacationer being mistaken as an employee I thought this might be a mildly humorous addition.

I'm adopted from China, and since my parents are Caucasian I obviously don't look like them. Adopting me after being unable to have a biological kids was a big deal, so most of our extended family received letters and pictures about my adoption. Fast forward 17 years and it's the family reunion with extended family from all over the US. The hotel staff wore white button down shirts and black slacks usually with a black tie, and served some of the buffet options, or else walked around collecting drinks.

I was angsty, in the throws of teenage hormone, and didn't want to be there so I lurked by the buffet table and generally ignored everyone (no smartphone at the time so no Reddit). I also happened to be wearing a white button down with black jeans. An older woman approached and stood next to me for a few minutes, but I ignored her, stuffing my face with mini quiches. "Excuse me..... EXCUSE me. Where are the bathrooms?" She says, and I give a 'dunno' shrug. "You don't know? Isn't that your job?" I didn't say anything (face stuffed with food) "Well can I at least get another glass?" She hands me her empty champagne flute. "Oh," (as I catch on) "I don't work here." "You don't? Then what are you doing here? This is a private family function." She says, and I can tell she thinks I'm just some rando here for the food and is ready to kick me out. "That's my mom." I said, gesturing over in my mom's direction. The woman looks over at my mom, and then back at me, and I can tell she doesn't believe me. So I call "MOM" in her direction, using the universal 'i need your attention' tone of voice, making my mom turn around. The older woman apologizes and leaves, fairly embarrassed. I was mistaken as a waiter several more times that night, by extended family and the actual waiters. I wish I could have said the story was more dramatic then that, but it wasn't, it just kind of mildly sucked.
