"Don't have kids! Just get a puppy instead!" Hahaha....
Externally: "Haha, ok. I'll keep that in mind."
Internally: "... I'll keep that in mind tonight while I am actively trying to conceive a child with my husband." >:[
I was walking into my boss's office to drop something off to her and in the adjoining office our business manager was on the phone with her daughter. I couldn't hear what she was saying because 1. I wasn't paying attention and 2. I have an ear infection and just legitimately can't hear things right now. On my way back past her she hung up and then said the above to me. She was obviously joking and just frustrated with her (college-age) daughter, but, being in the position that I am in (ttc) I just didn't even know what to say to that! I just kind of "laughed" it off and walked away a little bummed.
Why do people think that this is a funny thing to say to someone who doesn't have children? It's so common!! I mean, virtually all comments about our reproductive lives are just as common (i.e. "When are you having kids??") but the "negative" ones specifically have been really bothering me lately. I used to just let it roll, and laugh it off. I know people generally mean well, and its all "in good fun" but now that we're actually trying, getting told "don't have kids!", even in jest, is kind of a buzzkill. I would have said something, but I didn't want to come back with "Actually, we're trying, so there!" because I don't want to share that info with her, and also, my boss, by happenstance, is also my cousin, and she would have overheard.
I dunno where I was going with this, I just felt like I needed to get it out. I've been dwelling on it all day. :/
