(Spoilers) (Advice) Is METAL appropriate for a casual reader?

Spoiler

I've read around half of Snyder and Capullo's run on Batman and a few other of Snyder's stories. I loved it all but fell off because I was busy. As for DC history I know a fair amount but there's plenty I don't know and plenty I haven't read.

Whenever writers draw from the massive amount of convoluted history of characters or pull oddball characters from the forgotten past (lookin' at you Morrison) I always feel lost and like i'm missing out. It's not always a drag but it certainly some times is.

I was reading some stuff about Metal #1 and it seems to require a pretty vast understanding of DC comics history. Is this the kind of book I'd have to read while on Wikipedia or should I dive in? It looks wild and I love Batman.

I read about a reveal at the end that I don't wanna spoil for others but I didn't read the book that character is from. Also I know a fair amount about Hawkgirl and Hawkman but I also read that the way they use those characters is a little confusing and requires an understanding of a very convoluted history. This all makes me feel like I would be lost.

TLDR; Is Metal worth a read for someone who only has a novice understanding of DC Universe as a whole? Also worthy of note- I have not been reading Rebirth but I read about it a bit.
