Is there an unmistakeable way to verify the beginning/ending of totality other than calculated times?

Given the juxtaposition of immediate eye damage outside of totality along with the fact it IS safe to look unshielded at the sun during it I want to know if there's some hard sign of when it's safe to actually watch the eclipse without glasses and when to stop.
