(CAN) My dad passed away and I need a financial strategy for my mom and brother
My dad recently passed away and I need some advice for my mom and brother. They live in the same house, and my brother pays rent/mortgage. When my dad was around, things were sustainable, but now that he’s gone I need to figure out a financial plan for them.
My mom’s nearing 60. My mom will be taking home around $1,700/month (after tax) with the money she receives from my dads pension and the money she makes part-time. My brother also works and he takes home about $1600-2000/month (after taxes) depending on the hours that he gets. With my dads passing, they should have some money to pay off most if not all of their debts, minus the mortgage. This will eliminate a good chunk of their monthly expenses, but I’m afraid not enough.
They pay about $1750/month for the mortgage plus about $300 property taxes on the mortgage. The house is valued at around $350,000 -$375,000 and they still owe about $250,000 on the house. After all of the costs associated with my dads passing (funeral, burial, etc.) my mom is estimating that she’ll have about $50,000. I know that a chunk of this should go to an emergency savings.
I’ve roughly calculated the following monthly costs:
- Electricity - $150
- Water and gas - $100-150
- Food - $150-200
- Phone, internet - $300
- Car insurance (they each have a car and need it to get to their jobs. Transit would cost more) - $175
- Car gas (their cars are pretty good on gas given how often they drive) - $90
- Pet expenses - $150
That brings them to $1,215 in monthly expenses, plus the $1750 mortgage and $300 property tax, for a grand total of $3,265/month. Together they make $3,400, which concerns me because that is only $135 of savings per month, and that can easily go down if they have any hours cut at their job. Add to this that my mom is only getting older, and she needs some sort of retirement plan.
Sorry if my explanation is all over the place. My mind is still in a fuzzy state with my recent dads passing. Any advice or suggestions would help. If you need any other clarification let me know.
Thank you.
