What are some of the best resources for learning about the current era of the Forgotten Realms?

I'm a new DM and am running the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign, which takes place in the northern parts of Faerûn. I've never read anything more than R.A. Salvatore's first book in the Drizzt series and am currently taking notes on Volo's Guide to the North (written in 1993 for AD&D). I've started to question its place in the current FR era since much has changed since its writing.

Would this book suffice for general information about the North or are there better resources for learning about Faerûn?
