Getting started with chaos

Im very new to the 40k scene and im picking up chaos as my starting army, ive been following the lore for a long time now and ive got funds set aside to actually play the game. With the new codex drop i wanted to run a Emperors Children warband mixed with some slanneshi daemons. Is this feasible to be run competitively and what are some good places to start. From lurking ive seen that terminators with combi plas are a decent unit and obliterators are popular as well.

My store environment is more competitive than not most of the time.so I though starting here would be better.
