(Sorry this is a bit long! I have OCD with health phobias and get a little rambly when I'm in the middle of an attack of that, like right now.)
Hi there! So earlier this year, I had switched to a new deodorant that seemed to be irritating me a bit, but very minimally. (I thought at first that I was overreacting, because I had recently tried some other new ones that caused INTENSE burning and stinging, so I was nervous about that happening again.) This seemed to be drying me out a little too much and cause some slight irritated feelings, but nothing unbearable.
I ended up catching a bad cold and was in bed for a few days. I noticed when I lifted my right arm that it stung a bit, but I assumed a hair had gotten pulled and ignored it (I was too annoyed by the cold to think much about it.) Spent about three days in bed, and then I went to take a shower (I hadn't showered during that time because showering with a fever gives me horrible panic attacks).
When I was getting undressed, I noticed a red sore on my left armpit. When I looked closer, I saw more (they looked like burns, or like I had rubbed my skin off) - it looked like I had rubbed my skin raw. It was the same on my left armpit, but less severe. I showered and cleaned it, and assumed I had rubbed it raw on my sports bra in bed while sweating, based on what a few friends had told me happened to them when they chaffed on their bras/clothing.
But it didn't fade after a few days. It became very painful to move my arms much - it would burn and felt like pulling on scraped skin. I wore loose clothing and kept it overly clean. I was, stupidly, still using the deodorant. I finally stopped after a couple of weeks, and it started to clear up.
I assumed the deodorant was drying me out, so I used it about once a week and used a different deodorant the rest of the time, to see if I could get my skin used to it. The skin healed over and began to peel like a sunburn, and there were faint, light pink marks that looked like faint scars. I eventually switched back to my old deodorant, and it went away entirely. I did start shaving my armpits, as my skin seemed suddenly prone to getting more itchy/irritated when I didn't (although this may have always been an issue, and I was just hyper-aware of it right now. I have sensitive skin so it get itchy/etc. frequently and don't give it much concern.)
It's been no issue for months. Last night, I was wearing a tank top and noticed the skin around my armpits (not the section with hairs - I hadn't shaved in about a week) was bright pink. It's a larger area on my right armpit, but it is on both. No raw sports, no itching or burning. At worst, my underarms felt a bit tight or something when I moved my arms. I had just showered a few hours earlier and noticed nothing.
Today the skin is less pink, but still a bit pink. Both are now itching some, although it may be due to not wearing deodorant today (I'm afraid I'm now reacting to my usual deodorant).
I'm assuming it may be eczema, as my skin has been very dry lately, and I tend to break out in an eczema-like patch on my right arm if I dry out too much (I tend to shower every other day, because if I shower daily that spot on my arm turns rough, scaly, and slightly reddish.)
My health ocd is making me terrified it's a candida infection or something like that, and that if I don't go to a doctor, it'll get in my bloodstream and kill me. (I know how unlikely that is, even if it IS an infection, but my OCD won't calm down.)
I'm trying to decide if it's more likely a dry skin/eczema issue, an allergic reaction, or an infection - or if it's something else. I'm also trying to decide if I actually need a doctor or not (I'm horrified of doctors, so I try to avoid it, and I'm VERY busy at work the next few days, so it would be difficult to go.)
Thanks so much for any help!
