Anyone else wonder what the regular Salmon Eggs are for?

Like, do they actually do anything, or are they simply a way to measure individual effort in Salmon Run? I know they allow us to upgrade weapons in Single Player, but they don't seem to carry over from Salmon Run or anything so what's their purpose?
