2010 MBP and Monoprice 28" monitor — Mini DP to DP cables keep dying

I've burned through three Mini Displayport cables this year — I suspect the Macbook Pro is frying them somehow. My wife has the same setup with a current 2015 MBP and has yet to kill a cable.

Is this a known thing? I haven't found any info about it. I've tried all sorts of cables, not just the same one from the same manufacturer. My last one lasted about a month.
