Work/Volunteer in first year or Nah?

Hey guys, just wondering if you would recommend taking on a part time job or volunteering position/internship during first year? Really worried about balancing school with work/volunteering... I want to get experience to help build my resume, but I don't believe that experience should come before my studies at school. Side note: lol I'm a life sci student but dunno if that is really relevant to this question ahaha
