How much should I compliment her on a date?

Hello ladies. On the spectrum of no compliments at all to too many, what level of compliments would you find thoughtful but not overbearing? I generally get excited about learning about my dates personality and experiences, so I often get engaged and forget to compliment them if they dressed up nicely for the occasion, etc. I am worried that it makes me seem uninterested and more friendly, when I really may be interested in them romantically. Of course, not all compliments are equal, so a second question is: what kind of compliments would you like to hear (i.e. is it nice when he acknowledges that you wanted to look nice for the occasion)?
