What's your opinion about renewable energy (wind, solar, etc), with and without subsidies?

I'm including subsidies in the title because whenever they get talked about it's one of the first things to come up. So, what's your opinion about them as an alternative to fossil fuels, both in short and long term? With subsidies? And without them?
