When is spray paint acceptable?

So like the title says, when is spray paint acceptable? I'm thinking about wrapping my car in Avery vinyl wrap because the early 90's white paint on my car is flaking as they all do for this make/model/year. My original plan was to sand down the flaking paint, primer, and sand to 1000 grit wet-sanding and then wrap but most of the manufacturers of vinyl wrap (Vvivid, 3M, Avery...) have told me it would be best for the adhesive if it was painted and cleared. So my question is, would this be an acceptable use of spray paint? Essentially sand down the flaking paint, primer, sand, paint, wet sand, clear coat, wet-sand, and buff. All the proper steps and prep procedures but the paint, primer and clear would be coming out of a spray can and then be wrapped when it's all done and had proper time to dry and cure before wrapping. Thoughts?
