Those of you hiring a doula - did you ask your OB/midwife their feelings on doulas first?
My husband and I interviewed a couple of doulas, and we're about to pull the trigger to commit to one for my hospital birth. Doulas are not very common in my area.
The main reason I want a doula is because my husband does NOT do well in hospital/medical settings and has a tendency to faint. He almost fainted twice now during my regular check-ups. I don't have any other family in the area, so we are hiring a doula because although I have no doubt my husband will try his absolute best, I can't really depend on his total support during labor. Additionally, I'm hoping for unmedicated (hey, maybe I'll have one of those super fast, easy jackpot labors!), but I am VERY much open to anything necessary, and whatever my OB thinks is best. I love my OB and completely trust his opinion.
However, we have another doctor's appointment scheduled for Monday, and I am really torn if I should mention hiring a doula to my doctor. I would seriously consider not hiring a doula if my doctor told me that he hates them or something, and I also don't want my doctor to suddenly think that I'm against him and his opinions. On the other hand, since I'm hiring a doula mainly as a 'husband back-up', I wonder if I just shouldn't even bring it up to my doctor unless he specifically asks. None of the doulas I interviewed had ever worked with my doctor before (using a doula isn't common in my area), although most of them had worked at the hospital that I am delivering at and said the hospital in general was doula-friendly.
So long story short - those of you hiring a doula - did you get your midwife's/OB's blessing before hiring them?
