1910 Inda Ave
Firstly, I should say I’ve been reading r/nosleep for a long time now and have never before experienced anything I deemed as post-worthy. I am interested to hear perspectives or ideas about this experience. I’m in the military and have been stationed on Florida’s pan handle for more than 5 years. I recently received notification that I’m getting re-stationed to Texas. My wife and I sold our house and moved to Pensacola to stay with her Grandmother while we wait for our move to Texas.
I work on Eglin AFB and now have a joyous hour and fifteen minute commute to work every morning, then I drive another hour and fifteen minutes back at the end of the day. That’s two and a half hours a day, traveling 140 miles per day. Needless to say, I haven’t been crazy about the new routine.
Last weekend my wife told me our Golden Retriever, Walter, had been a regular ass hole about his new routine and said she had narrowed the cause down to the fact he had too much energy. He is only a year old so he’s got plenty of it. He’s been barking a lot and keeps jumping on the back door, scratching the glass. So my wife asked if I could take Walter for walks in the mornings before I go to work, hoping that would calm him down for the rest of the day. I wasn’t crazy about the idea and we even got into a fight about it.
By Sunday, after plenty of debate, it was settled that I would be walking Walter before I went to work from now on. After all, she takes care of our kids while I’m at work all day and they can certainly be a pain in the ass by themselves. So starting on Monday, I woke my happy ass up at 0400 and took a few sips of coffee before I went out to the garage to get Walter leashed up and ready to go. To paint a picture, the house currently has my wife’s grandparents, their hound dog, my wife and I, our 3 boys, and Walter stays in the garage because he’s a fool who can’t control himself. Basically, there’s a lot of potential to wake people up this early in the morning so I try to stay quiet.
So I go to the garage which is through a door in the kitchen, I open Walter’s kennel and put his leash/harness on, and then I push the button to raise the garage door. I hate the sound of the garage door and it still baffles me that the screech doesn’t wake anyone up. So there we are, walking down the driveway toward the street, feeling amazing about what time it is and how barely awake I am. I hadn’t put much thought into it but I figured this walk was about Walter so I let him decide whether we go left or right. He chose left.
As we walked down the road, Walter was noticeably excited about the situation and couldn’t make up his mind which side of me to walk on. He stopped in a few spots to sniff where other dogs had marked. We heard the sounds you’d expect to hear on the street at that hour. AC units kicking on, crickets, and frogs. At one house I saw a cat sitting on the porch, making a howling sound which made me laugh. I couldn’t tell if it was talking to me or begging its humans inside to let it in. The street was fairly well lit between the orange street lamps and well-spaced house’s front porch lights.
Before I continue, I should say I love the feeling of being scared. I used to love horror movies when they were actually scary. Sure, they still make good ones, but most of them just don’t seem to have the creep factor that they used to. Not to mention my wife refuses to watch them because they haunt her brain for months afterwards. So again, I love fear.
As Walter and I walked, I began to see up the street that the orange street lamps stopped at a stop sign, leaving only darkness beyond it so I chose that to be our turn around point. No, not because I was scared, but for regular safety reasons. I like to be able to see my dog and any other animal that may want to accompany us on our journey. Also, should a car of an early bird driving to work happen to turn onto the street, I’d prefer to be seen.
During our walk, I had been scanning both sides of the street just making small observations about the neighborhood because I had never walked there before, and what the hell else was I supposed to do? As we neared the stop sign where the light stopped, I saw the house on my left.
1910 Inda Ave
There were huge hedges going around the entire perimeter which intertwined with the wooded area between it and the property next to it. The intersecting street runs along the other side of the house. There is a small walk-through gate and then a larger drive-thru gate further down. Beyond the hedges I could see various small statues of what look to be children. The windows were completely black, as if there were no blinds or curtains to shield the cold emptiness the house contained. The whole property just gives me the creeps. So I cautiously slowed down as I began to pass by.
At the walk-through gate I saw a small, white dog that from what I could tell was a shih-tzu or a poodle. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be strange to me but there were three things that stood out in my mind that made it strange. The first thing is that the dog was vigorously chowing down on what appeared to me to be a black bird. The wing sticking out of its mouth wiggled as the dog moved it back and forth, tearing at the feathers. What light there was allowed me to see around its snout which was dark with what I assume was blood.
The second thing that stood out to me was that the dog watched me and Walter as we walked 10 feet from the gate it was sitting behind and had no other reaction. I had thought a dog outside just after 4 in the morning would be a little more protective of its area but it remained calm and watched me as it continued to tear the black bird apart.
The third thing that struck me as weird is that Walter didn’t even seem to notice the other dog. Walter always notices everything else around him that moves. He’s not aggressive, he’s actually a scaredy cat, but he always notices. It was as if the dog wasn’t even there.
That’s the first time I laid my eyes on the house at 1910 Inda Ave, and it gave me the creeps. After I turned around at the stop sign and began heading back toward home, I caught myself looking back a few times to try to snag a glimpse of anything that could get my scare meter up. The house had creeped me out, but I blew it off and accepted that sometimes life is just weird.
I got back to the house, put Walter outside in the back yard to roam around, and got ready for work. And that damned drive.
Tuesday morning came around and there I was again. Waking up to an annoying alarm clock on my phone at 0400 to slowly make my way to the kitchen and push the button on the already prepped coffee maker. After drinking a full cup of liquid go-time, I was back at it in the garage, getting an excited Walter harnessed up for another adventure.
It wasn’t until we were half-way down the drive way that the house before the stop sign entered my mind. The hair on my neck stood up just thinking about it but Walter and I took a left out of the driveway again and were on our way. It seemed like another normal morning. I heard the same sounds as I had on Monday morning. There was no howling cat to laugh at but Walter stuck his nose in the wet grass at one point along the way and a frog hopped out. It startled the shit out of him and made him jump toward the middle of the road. Then he just started walking normally again as if to say “I’m cool.” As I said, the dog has little courage.
I had looked at my phone to see what time it was when we left so I could figure out how long we were taking on our walks. It was 0413 when we headed out. As we came to 1910 Inda Ave, I took my phone out to see it was 0425. Just as I hit the button to turn off the screen I saw something in the woods across the road from the house. In the split second I had to make it out, I saw what appeared to be a woman standing on the tree line with her back to me. I saw long dark hair flowing down her back contrasting her light blue night gown. Before I could even generate a thought in my mind, she was gone. My creep meter got some juice. My heart was racing and I didn’t know what to do. I looked down at Walter and to my surprise, he was sitting at my feet, staring into the tree line and his tail was wagging.
I decided it was a good time to head back. This time I looked back so many times I might as well have been walking backwards. Walter was totally cool but I was speed walking with my heart beating out of my chest. Half from fear and half from excitement. This kind of thing had never happened to me before. All I could do was wonder if I actually saw what I saw or if it was my mind playing a trick. We made it back without incident and I got ready for work while thinking about the end of the road. Part of me was telling me that the creepiness from Monday morning was causing my mind to create more creepiness for Tuesday Morning.
It gave me something to think about on the long drive to work and I found myself scanning the tree line along I-10 to see if I could catch a glimpse of more creepy shit. I never did see anything but it was a way to pass the time while I drove.
When I got home late Tuesday afternoon, I wanted to make it a point to mention 1910 Inda Ave and see if my wife’s grandmother knew anything about it, since she had lived there for a long time. My wife and her grandmother were getting dinner ready in the kitchen and I was sitting at the bar across the counter. My wife set unknowingly it up perfectly for me. “Walter’s been really good since you’ve been going on walks.” She said happily. “Good”. I replied. “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but there’s a house at the end of the road that gives me the creeps.” I said. “1910 Inda Ave.” As soon as I said the address, her grandmother stopped in her tracks and dropped the bowl of salad she was carrying. After a few second pause, she knelt down and began cleaning it up, playing it off as a silly accident and blaming it on her clumsiness.
I knew my wife’s grandmother knew something but I wasn’t going to pry because I could tell it had her unsettled. I didn’t want to go into detail with my wife because I wanted to know more and see more before I went full-on “crazy person rambling about ghosts in the woods” mode. I left it at that and decided to venture out the next morning to see what could happen. So far, it had escalated from a creepy white dog chewing on a black bird the first morning to what had to have been a night-gowned woman on the tree line across the road the next day. Wednesday would prove to be interesting.
Wednesday morning started just as the previous two mornings had. Walter and I took a left at the end of the driveway and headed for the stop sign. I was thinking to myself that I had imagined everything but part of me hoped I hadn’t. Everything seemed normal so far. Walter stopped to shit on someone’s lawn and I was kicking myself for forgetting the baggies to pick it up with. I looked around as he squatted to see if I had witnesses. There were none that I could see but I still feel terrible about that.
As I came to 1910, I saw the white dog again. It was in the same spot and seemed to be chewing on the same bird. It felt like déjà vu. I stopped completely for a minute to just watch it as it tore at the feathers just like it had Monday morning. It apparently didn’t like the fact that I stopped because it dropped the black bird, stood up on the gate, and started barking at me like I was an intruder. Again, Walter acted as if nothing was happening. It was turning into another bizarre morning. Fearing the barks of the dog were going to wake the surrounding neighbors and cause me to look suspicious as I stood in one place outside of the house, I decided it was best to turn around and head back down the street. As I turned, I saw her. The lady in the blue night gown was standing there on the tree line side of the road, not 5 feet from me. Her face was horrible, for lack of a better word. She had no eyes or even sockets where eyes might have once been. Her long straight hair was partially in her face but I could see she had the slightest grin on her face. She had what looked like bruising around where her eyes would have been. I stopped breathing for what seemed like forever as I tried to figure out what I was supposed to do. When reality finally struck me, I managed to peel my eyes away from the ominous face before me and see that Walter was sitting at my feet and wagging his tail again as he gazed at her.
I don’t think I’ve ever run so fast in my life. It was the most fear I had ever felt at one time. Walter apparently thought it was a game and he helped drag me along as I desperately tried to make it back to the house. I didn’t look back. I was fully concentrated on being back inside the house and didn’t know what else to think about. After we got back, I hung out in the garage for a few minutes to catch my breath so my heavy breathing wouldn’t wake anyone up. When I was finally calmed down, I got ready for work and headed out. What I saw on the road consumed my entire day. It was all I could think about. Wednesday night after work was weird. There was no way I was bringing up what I saw to anyone in my house. I wouldn’t believe it if it hadn’t nearly made me piss myself that morning.
That was last night. I didn’t sleep for shit all night and my wife laughed at me when I got up to close the closet doors in the room because the closet appeared to be staring at me. She asked me what was going on because she thought I wasn’t scared of anything. I just said I had been thinking about that creepy house. I wasn’t going to tell her anything that would make her send me to the nuthouse.
With the lack of sleep, came a late start for Walter and I this morning. I had to force him at first, but we took a right out of the driveway.
I’m having mixed feelings about the whole situation now. The more I think about it, the more I want to go back. I tried looking up the property today and found that the google maps street view of the property is almost as creepy as it is in person. As far as bad history, I wasn’t able to find any. At this point I have no clue what to do and will take any advice any of you crazies have.
