Why do I see high level players forward dashing into opponents while at close range multiple times in a row?

I was watching all the Taisei sets from Evo, and he would forward dash right in his opponent's face multiple times. I've seen Saint do this as well. It seems like you're just leaving yourself open since you are not blocking when forward dashing.
