Split screen on non-dedicated server

Me and my friend have been playing single player and today I hosted a non-dedicated for the first time and we played split with a friend online.

We went away for two hours, came back, and now he can't join.

It says the user doesn't have online privileges but his ps plus is still active.

Any ideas?
