Cons of synthesis?
I have yet to buy my first synth, and I have been wondering how getting into synths affects the way you compose music. I've had the same shitty keyboard since I was about 13 (a preowned yamaha psr-190), but only in the year have I really gotten in to playing it. The sound is pretty garbage, so when I mess around on it, I spend most of my time trying to find chord progressions, or melodies that sound interesting etc.
However, in the last few months, since my brother and I started buying guitar pedals, I spend increasingly more time running the keys through the pedals to make the strangest sounds I can. I'm saving for my first synth (looking at a prophet 8 if I can find one), and while I'm pretty excited to finally have an instrument that can produce non-shitty sounds, I am a little worried that I'll sink all my time into making crazy patches rather than messing with the music.
What has your experience been with synths? Have you found that they distract you from composing music, or enhance your composition?
Tldr; does the variety of sounds synths are able to create detract at all from your experimentation in composition?
