Although enjoying the movie, It missed the marks on everything that made the anime great.
SPOILERS!!!!
I honestly enjoyed the movie. I think it's a solid 4/10 which is far from great and far from hitting the mark but I enjoyed it nontheless. There were fun moments that made me laugh, when Light sees Ryuk for the first time and screams for example, but the longer the movie continued and it's plot developed, the more flaws appeared.
I think the main issue here was the movie format and there just not being enough time for this story.
It seems like they tried to get everything good from Death Note Anime worked into this movie, however since it's a movie they didn't have time to actually work on any of them.
They didn't take time to flesh out Light as a character at all before getting the book. In the anime we at least got a few minutes to get to know the character and who he is. Here everything was done so hastily. Within maybe 10 seconds of light coming on screen he has the book.
Another thing I loved from the anime was Light using the book by himself and taking that jump by himself. In this movie they sped up the process of him using the book by having Ryuk push him. This immediately took away more character development from Light and just made Ryuk not make sense.
Because of them not fleshing out light as a character, in the finale of the movie it also didn't feel right that Light had such a plan thought out. Most of us know he's capable of a plan like that but that's only because we have a fleshed out image of Light because of the anime.
Another example of them trying to get everything of the anime into the show but half assed so it takes away from the story is how they treated Ryuk being written into the book.
The way it is in the anime is that the consequences for writing a shinigami into the book are horrible, here they make it seem that Ryuk will just kill Light if he tries, again chipping away at the characters for time purposes.
In conclusion:
If they made this into a netflix tv show, they could've definitely made an above average, whitewashed version of Death Note that most would enjoy. This was honestly trying to adjust content to press it all into 1,5 hours.
I definitely think netflix has the budget and fan base to make great live action anime adaptations. This would've been great and I'm certain if they could try again it would've ended better. It really is a shame but I enjoyed it a bit regardless
