I can't stay at any job longer than 2 years. I feel like I'm completely lost with my career.

Like the title says, I can't stay at any job for longer than two years. I start to get bored, start to dread coming in, dread the commutes, get tired of the BS 9-5 lifestyle.

Every time I have switched jobs I've gotten a large pay increase, but it didn't necessarily make my life any more enjoyable.

I personally don't really know where I am headed in life. I'm a wanderer. I have no clue why I am even working, or what I am working toward.

While on paper I look very successful, mentally and emotionally I am a wreck. I am very disappointed in myself because I was recently let go from my previous job and spent roughly a month and a half searching. I joined a very large well known bank/financial institution in the midwest.

This is a company and a industry that I promised myself early in my career that I would never join, because I despise that type of mega corp culture. Circumstances changed, and because I couldn't get any other offers, I had to accept from them. Although the pay is great, I just feel so hopeless.

I can't help but feel I have no purpose. That this is what I will amount to in life, to be a corporate drone in some boring grey cubicle farm.

I got put on a team working on some small internal applications. 90% of my team, and it seems like 80% or more of the devs in the company are H1B visa indian devs.

I am sitting next to some people who have been at this company for 40 years. 40 F'n Years. I simply cannot picture that. I have no clue how someone can do the same thing for that long.

I'm way too restless, get bored way too easily, and get cynical way too easily to ever properly stay at 1 company for very long.

I have no idea how this is going to affect my career. It feels like you either have to eventually commit to 1 company, or your career derails.

I'm also starting to realize that the higher I climb, the more I don't really like it. Programming is not really a hobby of mine, and I just do it for the money, but I'm realizing I really don't like building software from scratch. I work better with an already built application where I do bug fixing or similar. The higher I climb, the more they want you to do design sessions, whit boarding, etc which I hate.

I feel so trapped. I feel like i'm in some mini prison. Especially in a large city. I have always been a rural person, and maybe someday want to buy a home in the far burbs. Problem is that if you want to do that, you need to prepare for a long commute. So I kind of feel trapped in that way.

I also feel trapped in the sense that there is honestly no easy way out of this. It seems like if you don't work the 9-5 grind, you don't really get good money. So yeah I can switch jobs again, but it's not really going to fix anything. I'm still going to dread it all, waking up at the crack of dawn, etc. I feel hopeless.

The worst part of it all is that its all self inflicted. I'm the one that put myself in this position. I didn't have to join mega corp, but I did. Now I have to lie in the bed i've made.

my job tenure has been:

Company 1: 2 years

Company 2: 3 months

Company 3: 1 year 10 months

Company 4: Current
