Don't run in to break up a dog fight [vent] [help]
Rule of thumb for dog owners is to not get in the middle of a dog fight. I know this. I've practiced this before. Grab the back legs or shoot them with a water hose. Yesterday my two doggos got into it. And I mean bad. Blood everywhere. One needed stitches and a drain. Everyone's on abx. Well my stupid self walked right into it. I heard the screaming and ran into the yard. Crying, yelling, trying to startle them away from each other. Tried to grab collar and pull. Only one had a collar on because we were at home. Didn't work. I tried to pull the bigger one off. My lab mix, my baby, the love of my doggy life was in such a state that she nabbed my ankle. Hard. I realized how dumb I was being. Ran over to the hose. Sprayed them with water. Didn't work. Neighbors ran over because of the screaming. Dogs finally separated into two bloody messes and I immediately separated them.
They're both pretty torn up. I ended up in the ED and can no longer place weight on my foot. She may have gotten the muscle. Ow.
It's my own fault for getting in the middle. I know better. I also remember the screaming and snarling. I remember the blood everywhere. They'll be separated for quite a while especially while the 50lb lab is on crate rest but mostly because my trust is shattered. I don't want to go through that again. I don't know what started it but I'm shaken up. Already left a message with a trainer and have a baby gate and crates for separation. Keep your fingers crossed for me please. I never thought the bonded pair would end up like this.
Tldr: instincts can be bad. Don't jump in a dog fight. How do I get past this?
