Worst government "inventions"?

We have all heard of how the government "invented" the internet as a way to justify large government funded research programs. While there are the standard arguments like it would have been developed regardless or funding could have displaced private enterprise these always fall flat in arguments. As an alternate approach, what are your examples of the worst government funded "inventions" to give as a counterpoint?
