Question about the seemingly excessive amount of seriousness in this subreddit.
So, I recently have been lurking around this subreddit, and one thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a mix of "serious letterers" - people who are students or are trained in some form of calligraphy in the line - and "casual letterers," who seem to mostly just be doing stuff for fun. Both of these kinds of people are putting their work out there to see what people think, and that's great.
Furthermore, I've noticed that the people who are "serious letterers" seem to approach "casual letterers" as though they are serious as well. Sometimes kids (and adults) just like to write and draw fun things, and even though their form may be improper in your book, you don't have to go all over their post about how their x-height and angles and width consistency, etc., are all wrong. I understand some people specifically ask for that kind of constructive critique and advice, but others don't.
So, I was wondering how serious this subreddit is, if there really isn't much place for "casual letterers" in the truest sense of the word and if there would be a better subreddit for those kinds of folks?
(I would consider myself somewhere in between serious and casual, but I enjoy being casual because I can play around and develop my own sense of the art, even without all the "proper" training and practice. And yes, I know calligraphy is a legitimate, formal art with certain protocols and it does take proper training and practice to become good at it. I guess it's just that not everyone who letters is trying to become a proper caligeaphist but it feels like people get all hung up on how someone's casual art doesn't fit into what they think it needs to be - I mean, there is an entire subreddit devoted to calligraphy, so...)
Thanks, and hopefully I didn't ruffle too many feathers.
