Xbox One multiplayer over local network (LAN)

I have an Xbox One Elite Console. I will be getting the new Xbox One X when it comes out for my 4k HDR TV. If I keep my Elite console, is there a feature that allows for playing multiplayer on a local network (LAN) versus playing online?

Say my son and I would like to play a game together in co-op mode, for example, or play a sports game against each other. Can that be done? Are there only specific games that support this feature, if it even exists...or would any multiplayer game work?

Thanks in advance for any input.
