How Prevalent is Logic and Rationalism in Your World?

Discussion

(RPG, D&D 5e)

I have recently shied away from widespread in-world rationalism in my setting (Medieval Fantasy, so sue me). I think this approach makes the world both more interesting and more believable.

Don't get me wrong, meta-wise, I love fleshing out intricate ecologies, defining the relationships of the gods, and magic systems. I just realized my NPCs and my own general descriptions was more of an encyclopedic reading than a believable worldview (of course, in a more modern or sci-fi setting, or even in the case of some unique races, this may not be the case).

In my setting, which is low-fantasy, low-magic, and (human) society is generally still in the Dark Ages, I decided it didn't make much sense for the general population to be very logical in their world-view.

Superstition is more common than science. Common folk are more fearful of magic and medicine than in want of it, and unexplored regions abound with most believing (usually correctly) that monsters live there. Gods rarely make their will plain, and it is easy to mistake the whim or trick of one for the sincere desires of another. There is no clinical separation or description of each god, just conflicting myths.

You'll have to really look hard for someone with information on where to look for Basilisk eggs, or how to best serve the god Jorm, and even then it's probably just a story their gran told them.

There may be some with a more rational approach to the world. The odd wizard or certain ruler, but even then, they live in a world where this is uncommon, so they rarely invest fully or are ostracized for their way of thinking or meddling with the natural order. The closest you'll get are merchants, who are limited to the narrow track of what people want to buy and what they will pay.

TL;DR I have found using more superstitious and 'backwards' thinking for the majority of the people in my world has helped my world-building. How do you guys handle rationalism and academic thinking in your settings?
