So we need more miners?

I don't understand this stuff like a lot of us new people here but I am reading constantly trying to educate myself. If Antpool isn't confirming transactions and that is driving fees and tx times up, is the solution more miners to confirm transactions? How does one "become a miner" with the ability to confirm transactions and get paid those fees?
