How do the top ranks get a decillion angels within an hour of an event opening?

I'm pretty new to the game. This is my fourth event. I've finished Mars twice, am almost a centillionare on Earth, but I must be playing it all wrong. In the first hour of any event I'm lucky to get one angel, but the top ranks show multiple players with a decillion or more angels right after every event starts.
