Why do people report UFO sightings and alien encounters if they don't exist?

Obvs I'm a believer, but having just watched that new documentary, it makes me wonder why high profile people, military personnel, pilots, politicians etc would go on record saying what they're saying if in fact it's not true.

I believe that see what they say they have seen. But for the non-believers what are some reasons you think they would do this?
