How do you discipline a 5 month old kitten?

My kitten (Pablo) is 5 months old and understandable that it's his nature to act out. Then so, how would I prevent him from jumping on our bookshelf and destroying our 4th planter? lol. We've tried filling up a water bottle and spraying him with it, clapping loudly and saying no, we simply don't know how to stop him from doing these things and it can be frustrating. It's our first kitten so we really don't know much.
