Android Auto and Sync 3 over Bluetooth in a Focus RS

I have a 2017 RS. It has Sync 3 v2.0 installed. Android Auto works and I can control apps like Play Music, Pandora, PodBean, etc. from the car stereo, BUT only when the phone is connected via USB cable. I've seen videos that say it should work when connected via Bluetooth. Has anyone here got that working, or do you need to connect a USB cable to control Android Auto from the dashboard?

I have downloaded the v2.2 update from focusrs.org but don't want to apply it if it's not going to add the feature I'm looking for - the ability to control Android Auto when the phone is connected over Bluetooth.
