Rifle scope vs red dot?

Currently have my rifle setup with a 2-7 BDC scope and it's been fantastic but I've been thinking about switching to a red dot as I have no intentions of shooting beyond 2-250 yards. So first what do you all prefer, red dot or scopes? Second, what are the best red dots in the $250-550 range? Any input appreciated.
