Daine/Numair and consent
So, I've just reread The Immortals series now that I'm in my 20s and I find that I still love Daine and Numair's definitely-not-platonic relationship. As a feminist and human right's activist, I was surprised to find I didn't have an issue with their age difference.
I thought about that, and tried to sort out why.
Daine is 13 in the first novel, so by the fourth novel she's 16. Numair says he is almost 30 by the forth novel - Tamora has said he's exactly 27. That's an age gap of 14 years.
In Australia, where I'm from, the age of consent is 16. By the time Numair even hints his feelings for Daine, she is no longer his student but his equal. I also feel that Daine is emotionally-mature and quite worldly in her experience and knowledge. The cave scene makes me feel better about enjoying their relationship, since Numair is the one who feels guilty; he doesn't pressure her, or coax her - he gets upset when she mentions "canoodling". Ultimately, it's Daine's choice to pursue romance. If she hadn't wanted to, Numair doesn't seem the kind of guy to ever speak of it again.
I have relatives who are married despite being 10 years apart in age. Yet I can see that they love each other, and they care for one another.
I think all this coalesced (mostly that Numair doesn't guilt Daine, and Daine is a mature 16) makes me feel okay about it. Thoughts?
