Uses for chokecherry wood
Hi all -
Work continues on clearing horse pasture and making room for our new goats. The next challenge we've hit is finding a large number of chokecherry trees where the second pasture will be. I'm sad to cut them down - they're nice, old trees - but the wilted fall leaves are toxic.
My question is - what to do with the wood? I have been using cut trees to make wattle goat fencing, but I'm scared to use chokecherry as I know the goats pick at the bark. I'm even a little afraid to just burn it...does the cyanide in the wood volatilize? Could I use it to make raised log beds in the garden, or would the cyanide leech into the soil?
