Getting a Plott Hound mix this Sunday for my apartment and realized I'm a little less prepared than I thought. Any advice or experience?
First off, I do live in an apartment with no fenced in yard or anything. The shelter we're getting him from says he's a treeing walker hound mixed with a plot, though I'm unsure about that. He's about 5 months old so still a pup and should be relatively easy to train.
I have been sick and dealing with various other problems and figured a dog would help therapeutically. I got what I thought I knew about hounds from TV stereotypes - kind of lumbering and lazy dogs. After researching a bit, I realized that these hounds are energetic, require lots of exercise, and also need to be able to explore/scent based activities.
Hopefully the pup will be able to adapt to an apartment, and I do believe I can get outside with him a couple hours a day. There's also a fenced in dog park nearby that I can let him run around in off leash. My parents have another dog (the hound seems to be well socialized with the other pups from the shelter) and a yard for him to play in when I can manage to get him there.
It's important to me that I am able to keep up with his energy level and ensure he's happy and all his needs are met. I'm a little intimidated by what I've read and the amount of energy these dogs need to expend. Has anyone been in a similar situation or able to weigh in? Also, is there an effective way to minimize on barking? I've read that these dogs can get separation anxiety and bark when the owner leaves, but can be curbed with treat dispensing toys. Thanks so much!
