[5e] Swapping weapons for a gang of Kobolds?

I'm starting a new campaign today, and some of the players haven't ever played DnD, so they need a combat practice to teach them the basics. Therefore, I will make them fight a gang of Kobolds, but I think having only daggers feels dull and boring. The problem is that Kobods have a negative STR modifier, and they probably wouldn't be able to use rapiers, so I was thinking on giving them javelins, spears and clubs using DEX instead. Would this make the fight too hard? FYI, it's a party of 6, so I thought about 5 kobolds and 3 winged kobolds.
