rewriting the definition of _______

whether this gets a ton of replies or not, I was just curious why its socially acceptable to go and rewrite what a word mores and twist it to fit your means. Looking at the "confused" black man at a rally holding the confederate flag, why cant that flag take on a new meaning? is society not allowed to do this if it doesnt fit the PC mentality?
