ELIF: How do cough drops (which go down the esophagus) prevent coughing? (Which is a reflex of the trachea)

Furthermore, why do we reach for water when having a coughing fit or when we have an itch in our throat, when water goes down the esophagus and not the trachea (where the problem is)?
