The heroes are the heart of the game. Only by choosing a good team you can progress far into the game. I'm going to explain the most important choices you will face.

 

Leader hero:

By far the most important choice you will make is your leader hero. Each hero has his own unique leader skill that will affect your team. A Light God Pasura will give your light heroes +80% ATK while others may give you a defensive bonus. Pick one that creates a symbiosis with the rest of your team. This can be through mana type, attributes (divine, armored,...) or a general boost like +40% HP.

 

Group size:

Inspect your group size and decide which heroes will fit. Often 3 strong heroes will be better than 4 weak ones. High leveled heroes don't necessarily benefit your team more than normal ones. 1 legendary and 3 blobs will perform worse than a well rounded team.

 

Balanced attributes:

Try to find a good deal between offensive and defensive heroes. Going with maximum ATK will give you a hard hitting team but once you run out of HP you are done. This would enable many bosses to one-hit-kill you. It makes sense to pick heroes with offensive skills and defensive heroes with shield and regeneration skills. The 4 values you must keep in balance are ATK (attack), DEF (defense), HP (health points) and REC (HP regeneration after each beaten stage)

 

Mana types:

Think about risk vs reward when choosing your heroes by mana types. The strongest leader skills will only affect one type of hero and create the strongest team. But you will be likely to miss out on lots of turns due to the wrong mana being pulled. I'd recommend you to pick at least two different mana heroes. You can get a third mana type through the friend you use to battle.

 

Combos:

Each hero has a combo skill. If you can fit both heroes in your team you will unlock a much more powerfull additional skill to use in battle. Lord Azatas skill would usually heal your team ~10% while the combo skill with God Pasura will heal you ~60% and boost all stats by +30%.

 

Continuity:

Don't switch you team all the time. You will outfit your heroes with runes and level them up as you progress. Both of those tasks consumes gold. Only switch teams when it gives you enough advantage over the current team.
