Anyone else notice the obscure American bands in TV show promos?

Just now the TV was on in the background and a commercial for some show with the daughter of the popular MMA fighter was on tv.

They played a Boys Like Girls song from 2006, Heels Over Head. I hear the bands I listened to in my High School or early 20s a bunch on Korean reality shows.

I wonder what intern or PD puts this stuff together. Even Owl City, which is more popular but still from that era.
