Creating the Extremely Genre Specific /r/electronicmusic Playlist. Week 1: Drum and Bass / DnB / Drum & Bass…

Notes

Welcome to the first week of the Extremely Genre Specific r/electronicmusic Playlist! Please post, comment, and most importantly vote on songs you would want to see in a DnB playlist.

Be careful with songs from subgenres that sound too far off from the heart of DnB. You can still post them if you want - this week is DnB in general - but if the playlist ends up being all Drumstep or something people aren't going to have a good gauge of what DnB really sounds like.

September Genres

9/4 – Deep House

9/11 – Future Bass

9/18 – Progressive House / Prog House

9/25 – House (General)

SURVEY for October

Intro One of the most amazing things about music is that its variety allows it to cater to the tastes of everyone despite the great differences in between people. This can also lead to a challenge, however, as, despite our best efforts to categorize music into genres that can be used to neatly describe specific styles, discussing tastes can be challenging to someone who is unfamiliar. Especially now that there are so many different genres, it can be daunting to try to find what a new genre is really about or how to explain your favorite genre to a friend. To combat this issue, I have decided to start this weekly activity in which everyone can work together to create r/electronicmusic ‘s extremely genre specific playlists.

It's simple, nominate a song by posting it, and upvote the ones you like that fit well within the genre. The top 20 songs from individual artists (only the top songs of each artist will be added unless there aren't enough songs for the 20.) will be made into a playlist.

Guidelines for Posting

• Keep it one song per post

• Do NOT post albums / eps

• Please check the thread to see if your song has already been posted

• Always remember to use Artist - Song

• No songs that were already on a playlist

• Please include a link to the song (Spotify, Youtube, etc).

• UPVOTE SONGS THAT FIT. People seem to be more eager to post their own recommendations than to upvote others, and I get that and appreciate the enthusiasm, but the voting is just as important if not more so to the success of this playlist. Please listen to at least a few of the other songs if you weren't already, and make sure not to just pay attention to the "top" posts.

• Don't be afraid to NICELY inform someone the song is better suited to another genre. / Don't be offended if someone tells you this. Genres bleed together like crazy; we just want to keep the playlists as clean as possible.

Week 1: Drum & Bass / DnB / D&B / Drum n Bass

The RYM Definition of D&B:

Drum and Bass (often abbreviated DnB) is a style of electronic dance music typified by fast beats and heavy basslines. It formed out of the UK rave scene in the early 1990s, and has since seen both significant mainstream attention and the creation of several subgenres. At 160-180 BPM, the tempo is much faster than most other forms of club music, and often features elements a lot more complex in construction. The most common drum break used in Drum and Bass is the Amen break - sampled from the The Winstons' "Amen, Brother" - and like the genre's use of practically every drum break, it is taken apart until each drum hit is separate, allowing for new beats to be constructed, incorporating an intense use of syncopation and polyrhythms.

Notable Artists: Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Pendulum, High Contrast
