"Rule of Fives": Guide lines to assist the vote and report mechanic.

Mod post

This, I believe has been loosely stated before in a mod post when there was an aggressively contentious user in our midst. However, it doesn't hurt to mention it again, clarify, and to have a post available to link to in the side bar.

#What is it?

The Rule of Fives is a community guideline protocol for r/Ghost_in_the_Shell, set to dissuade those emotionally fuelled negative comments, brigading, personal vendettas, feuds, and personal attacks that might derail topics, or open community meta bullying opportunities, all stemming from user's inability to make peace with the ideas of others in the community.

#How does it work?

First, this community has yet to ban a human user. Which is quite impressive, given its age, demographic, and the content.

The primary line of defence for community interactions is the user agency of the vote system. Please, continue to use the down vote system as you have. From what I have seen, we seem to be a rational and reasonable bunch in general.

The second line of defence is the report option. At this point, mods will attempt to intervene, intent on reasoning away the problem, and hoping that they might help the reported users to consider a more community healthy approach to discussion.

The third line of defence comes when a user has a personal claim, with links to evidence to back up that there has been an unyielding frequency in a user's negative conduct. This will result in an examination of the evidence, and a judgement call, by the mods, to decide whether or not to temp ban a user to cool off.

Any attempt to directly message the mods to appeal a ban will result in a communication block.

#Why fives though?

The users interactions for the recent few days will have their vote scores tallied to create a general overview of their recent value to the community. 5 days is the maximum inspection limit to a user's contribution history. 5 contributions is the minimum requirement to gauge the general overview. And a score of less than -5 is necessary to save a user from the temp ban.

The temp ban is equal to that of new accounts: 15 days.

You will receive a message with your ban, outlining its temporary nature, and your recent community value number.

#What can I do to not get temp banned?

In general mod opinions on your conduct will weigh heavily on the assessment taken of your comment history. If it seems like you are being down voted or reported solely for having an unpopular opinion, within reason, you can feel pretty safe that you might walk away with a public comment from a mod reminding the community to use their votes for community betterment, not for distilling an opinion bubble.

Other than that:

Be civil. Be pleasant. Consider your thoughts, and arrange your ideas for accessibility. Don't judge user's content because you disagree with one of their opinions. Don't bring feuds from other threads outside.

#Why is this relevant to me?

Hopefully it isn't, but in the grand scheme it is an appeal to use the democratic system that is in place well.

So far, we have managed to outlast the influx of new users around the 2017 movie. And we have been rebuilding, and fortifying the community discussion since. So if you were one of those un-wavered by the breeze, thanks for hanging out while the hype train was in town. We should be back to "business as usual" soon.

Have a nice day, wherever you are in the world, and I'll see you around maybe.
