[Other] Any good apps that would be useful during the storm?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for useful apps to download for the storm. I'll be in East Orlando if that matters.

I was planning on getting weather apps, news apps, and possibly a walkie talkie app (any suggestions?) on one, and Netflix with downloaded content, offline games on the other.

i suggest getting a real set of actual walkie talkies because an app won't work if cell towers go down. Zello walkie talkie app confirmed on their twitter it requires either wifi or cell service to work just fyi. walkie talkies and CB radios don't rely on grids or infrastructure or even cell towers to work. on top of that if you lose power and can't charge your cell, walkie talkies are battery powered so you can just stock up on batteries. and get a good radio that is either battery powered or wind up. don't rely so heavily on your cell phone because it is likely that cell towers will be out sometime during and after the storm and you won't be able to keep it charged. just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice, I work for a tech company and will have 5 tablets from work with me along with a kindle fire, a few battery back ups and three phones so I'm not too worried about being able to keep a device with battery, but I only mentioned the walkie talkie app because I saw people in Houston were using it. Noted about walkie talkies, I might grab some if I see them on my final trip out tomorrow. Do you think anything else might be useful to get loaded up on their now?

Zello is the walkie-talkie app people have been talking about. I downloaded some emulators and roms as well. On a more serious note, maybe make sure you can already connect to local xfinity (available before/during/after hurricane) hotspots, so you can access the internet and keep an idea of where the storm is. I also charged a bunch of old phones and installed a flashlight app.

Here are some additional resources: https://www.sfwmd.gov/weather-radar/hurricane-model-plots https://www.reddit.com/r/TropicalWeather/comments/6yk2mz/comprehensive_checklist_to_prep_for_storm_please/?st=J79SZHRA&sh=3ed305f2

This is a maps app that allows you to whatever map data you need and keep it offline—so you can still navigate even without cell service.

Google Maps has this functionality too, but when you download an area it expires after a few weeks.

Noaa.gov is the National Weather Service and specifically the National Hurricane Center is nhc.noaa.gov. NOAA has an app. It is the best and most accurate with updates, tracking, maps...everything you need.

Also, if you pick the Weather from NOAA app, you can go to Ocean Storms/Atlantic, then scroll through and see all the Public Advisory Updates for Irma which are updated every few hours. The first app that shows up for NOAA is annoying with numerous pop-ups. The easiest too is just viewing directly from the site listed above...nhc.noaa.gov, which has all the stats.
