A Visit From the Green Fairy
nos omnes biberimus viridium toxicum

I. Davy Byrne’s Pub: The First Glass

Her curls cascade across emerald eyes
tumbling into Gibraltar bay where
Spanish ships surrender to her stare.
Anise enthrals;
our lips collide. Cube clouds annex.
Gibraltar yields,
fanfare in sirens’ voice,
aria for the Queen of Night,
absence of Absinthe.

II. The Green Fairy’s Domain: The Second Glass

Snowflakes syntectic
on caustic tongue distill
from dram of suffocating Scotch.
The moorless soul salutes
sastruga in the Spanish Sahara.
Terraform words like trees on Mars,
terracotta troops, Spartans at Thermopylae
fail the gateway to my heart.
Ground-glass fractals, Mobius strips
Turn memory to salt.
Mirage amalgam—
absence of Absinthe.

III. Verisimilitude: The Third Glass

In decadence, she decays,
her detritus bedlam byways
penumbra lined.

I search for her, in shattered flask,
absence of Absinthe.
