Ten Thousand Men
#Ten Thousand Men
They clothed themselves in rainclouds –
Wrapped their eyes in thunder
And marched out into the sea
In straight columns, a phalanx
Birthed from last generation's sorrow
And borne by the tides to our sorry shore.
“Glory, glory,” said ten thousand men,
“We are glory and beauty everlasting”
As they shove crabs in their raw mouths
And toast each other’s victories
With flagons of mud. One man removes
A helmet painted red, the color of war,
And rubs his temples, skipping a quarter
From a denim pocket and into the jukebox.
“Glory, glory,” said the jukebox,
“Peace is glory and love everlasting”
But no one believed it.
